Jill Scott was born on April 4 1972 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. Scott was raised as an all-only daughter by her maternal grandmother. Scott attended The Philadelphia High School for Girls when she was a senior, and then she was accepted into Temple University. In addition to working two job opportunities, Scott also studied secondary teaching in Temple University. The hope was to become a English high school teacher. However, her dream was put on hold when after 3 years of studies and as a teachers aide she dropped out of the college. She started her career as a spoken-word artist performing her own pieces during live poetry readings. She eventually linked up together with Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me is the result of their collaboration. During a Roots show she came out in the spotlight as an artist. She secured subsequent collaborations with Eric Benet Will Smith Common. She was also able to gain experience on stage as she performed in the Canada tour of Broadway show Rent. She became the first signed artist to the Hidden Beach Recordings label.
